When baby elephants are born, they must learn to use their trunks. This process can take months to master while they're busy chasing butterflies and tasting all the different kinds of grass on the plains. They constantly learn not just from their mothers but the entire herd as well. Baby elephant skin is very sensitive to the burning equatorial sun, but as long as they're in the shade of their mothers no harm can come to them.
